Catasauqua Compounding

Catasauqua Compounding Pharmacy was created to meet the growing healthcare needs of the Lehigh Valley in 2003, when Mr. Robert Hartzell, RPh, recognized a population of patients whose health concerns were not satisfied by “off the shelf” medications.

Mr. Hartzell has always been in tune with the personal nature of healthcare, operating Hartzell’s pharmacy for over 40 years as an independent community pharmacy targeting the overall well-being and health of Catasauqua and other surrounding communities.

Catasauqua Compounding Pharmacy was created as a specialty pharmacy and sister pharmacy to Hartzell's pharmacy, providing professional compounding services with a strong focus on bioidentical hormone replacement and veterinary medicine.

Services are also available to benefit various other areas of medicine including hospice and palliative care, pain management, sports medicine, pediatrics, dental care, dermatology, men’s health, nutritional support, and alternative medicine.

Catasauqua Compounding Pharmacy can even prepare a variety of sterile and aseptic preparations such as eye drops, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, nasal sprays, and irrigation solutions.

Mr. Hartzell has been a member of the Professional Compounding Centers of America (PCCA) since 1998, recognizing the importance of quality ingredients, training, and professional support when preparing personalized prescriptions for patients.  He has been a member of the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists (IACP) since (1993).  These memberships have helped Mr. Hartzell to develop and continuously improve the quality standards upon which Catasauqua Compounding Pharmacy was founded.

Benefits of Compounding?

Compounding is the ancient art of preparing medications tailored to a specific patient to treat a particular condition. Compounding has been a keystone to medical practice for thousands of years, with written records of apothecaries dating to ancient Egypt. Modern compounding has been able to preserve the ancient art, while using state of the art technology to improve the process and expand the scope of our capabilities. The rise of pharmaceutical companies in the 20th century lead to a decline in compounding as medical practitioners strayed away from customized medication toward standardized dosages and dosage forms. However, the recent rise in health awareness among patients coupled with the growing understanding that manufactured dosage forms do not fit every person has given rise to a new generation of compounding pharmacists armed with the necessary tools to make a difference.

Some patients don’t fit the mold. They require very specific doses of medications that may only be available in a few strengths. We can deliver the exact dose, based on weight or body surface area, or lab values to fit a specific patient who may have kidney disease or may otherwise need dose adjustment. We are not able to compound replicas of commercially available (manufactured) products, except in cases of medical necessity where a patient is absolutely unable to take the commercially available product for various reasons such as an allergy to an excipient, or if the manufacturer is unable to supply the medication. A letter of medical necessity will be requested for our files to document allergies.

Let's talk Bases

Ointment: When we see ointment, we usually reach for the white petrolatum – petroleum jelly. However, you may mean Aquaphor, lanolin, hydrophilic ointment or anhydrous ointment. If this is the case, please specify, or expect to hear from us.

Cream: When we see cream, our tendency is toward a standard emollient cream base. There are plenty of brand name creams that we can use varying from Dermabase, Eucerin, Acid mantle, Cetaphil, or bases containing aloe vera or cocoa butter. Each of these special requests needs to be written on the prescription.

Lotion: Lotions are a runnier version of a cream – usually in an emollient base. Again, there are a variety of commercially available lotions, and if you’d like us to use a specific product – this must be specified on the prescription.

Gel: When ordering a gel, the first thing to think about is the route of administration – which determines which types of gel will be appropriate. Pleuronic Gels – or PLO gels – have a better bioavailability than normal creams and ointments – allowing drug to penetrate into the bloodstream. We use some traditional PLOs, but many of our formulas have been converted to using a Lipoderm base in its stead. Lipoderm is a proprietary liposomal base that has shown to have better penetration than even PLO gels, while also carrying a longer shelf life and better consistency at varying temperatures.

BHRT – Menopause/Andropause

We work closely with a number of physicians in the area to provide bioidentical hormone replacement therapy to patients for various reasons.

The most common use is to treat the symptoms of menopause, but many women quickly realize that the hormones can provide additional health benefits when used in appropriate doses.

What does bioidentical mean?

Bioidentical refers to the molecular structure, or composition of the molecule for these hormones, which is identical to the forms available in the human body. It does not refer to the source of the hormone, as coming from a human body. All of our bioidentical hormones are derived from a natural plant source: Yams.

BHRT vs. Traditional HRT

The major difference between bioidentical hormone therapy and traditional hormone therapy is the source of the hormones. The other major difference is our ability, as pharmacists, to provide you with a customized dose to meet your body’s specific needs and your therapeutic goals. The Food and Drug Administration does not allow pharmacies to make specific claims about compounded hormone therapies, but we can help direct you to literature and research that may help to give you a better idea of the advantages and disadvantages of hormone therapy selection.

Saliva Testing & Consultations

We offer test kits for our patients to perform non-invasive saliva testing in a comfortable environment such as your own home. We work with licensed laboratories to provide laboratory hormone evaluations that can be used by our pharmacists and your physician to determine the appropriateness of hormone therapy.

Our test kits are priced to include a 30 minute consultation, patient history & evaluation, and any additional research required prior to your appointment. Your saliva testing and consultation fees may be covered under your insurance. Ask about your insurance plan today, and we can discuss your hormone testing options.

Dentistry

Good oral health contributes to overall well being. We are able to compound a variety of specialty formulations for dental use. Some of our most popular formulations are an analgesic gels containing Lidocaine, Tetracaine, and Prilocaine.

We also have the capability of providing numerous flavoring options that add to both palatability and overall good mouth feel.

Dermatology

Are you seeking products that do not contain irritating perfumes, parabens, or dyes? We can formulate a variety of creams, lotions, and ointments that meet your needs. Through consultation with you and your physician, our compounding pharmacy team can create a formula that meets your specific demands.

Endocrinology

Whether you are having difficulty with medications for diabetes, your thyroid condition, menopause or other endocrine disorders, Catasauqua Compounding's specialists can work with you to develop medications that target your personal needs. Our counseling services can help you best manage your disease states, to determine whether your medications are appropriate for your condition and what other therapy may benefit your specific needs.

Geriatrics

Your golden years should be the best time of your life. Unfortunately, aches and pains may limit your mobility and prevent you from enjoying yourself. At Catasauqua Compounding Pharmacy, we can formulate the fountain of youth, well not exactly…but we can sure make you feel better! There are treatment options for rheumatoid arthritis/joint pain, soft tissue inflammation, plantar fasciitis, general pain, migraines, and much more.

Pain

Pain is one of the most elusive and mysterious conditions known even in the age of modern medicine. Some of the first manufactured medications were developed to ease the pain of soldiers during combat. Pain presents in many different forms from many different causes, making pain management a constant struggle to provide relief. Pain causes undue psychological and physical stress, but when managed correctly may allow a person to lead a normal life.

We provide a number of solutions to pain care specialists to drive at the root of the problem causing the pain, while also providing relief through synergistic, or cooperative, medication actions.

Palliative Care & Hospice

We understand the emotional and physical burden of caring for a loved one in the end phases of a terminal disease. We also realize the importance of providing palliative care – pain relief and soothing – to patients who may not be able or willing to take medications through oral or invasive routes such as injection.

We can provide unique dosage form to assist with the ease of drug administration for palliative care.

Pediatrics

Many people believe that children are just young adults – and that is just not true. Children have their own unique characteristics throughout different developmental stages that can present challenges during necessary medication therapy. Children are not always able to metabolize medications as well as adults, though some medications are even easier to metabolize. They often require doses that are commercially unavailable and difficult to formulate from manufactured dosage forms. Allergies and sensitivities ranging from lactose, corn and gluten intolerance to deadly dye, silica and medication allergies may begin to develop, even further limiting the options for even the most talented pediatrician.

We specialize in finding, developing, and testing formulas for medications for children who have no other therapeutic options. We follow a strict policy of using two pharmacists to “double-check” all of our pediatric prescriptions, because we recognize the potential for error when providing medications for children while valuing quality in every medication we provide.

Podiatry

A typical American takes thousands of steps each day, covering miles of ground over an average day over 16 waking hours. We put our feet to good use, and now it’s time to pay them back for the effort! We are able to provide various solutions to the ailing foot, ranging from toenail fungus remedies to pain creams for diabetic patients.

Often, our podiatric compounds are very similar to our wound care solutions – because many patients don’t realize there is a problem until the problem is at its worst. However, we offer patients the opportunity to combine good health practices with simple to use medications in order to prevent ailments before they become troubling.

Sports Medicine

We share your love of sports, but we understand that overworked muscles and sports injuries don't all heal correctly with time, alone. By working with skilled sports medicine practices in the area, we assist in providing optimal delivery of medications that give you the best opportunity to return to your sport of choice as soon as possible. Through cutting edge therapies such as iontophoresis and phonophoresis, we can provide treatment options that get you out of physical therapy and back into action.

Veterinary Medicine

We love our pets, and we know you love yours too – in fact, they aren’t just animals – they are family. That is why we provide a wide array of medications for veterinary use only. We work hand in hand with veterinarians to select the most appropriate route of administration for medications that can help your furry (or scaley, winged, etc..) family member remain healthy and vibrant.

Our expertise in flavoring helps to make those intolerable medication dosing sessions a little more palatable.

Wound Care

Wounds produced by violent trauma, bed sores, or the precision of a surgeon’s blade are very similar, despite the obvious differences. The risk of infection is ever present in any wound or opened sore. The human body is remarkably durable in its ability to increase blood flow to healing regions and provide natural pain relief, but in many cases the body requires additional help. In the end, proper preventative wound care can save thousands of dollars worth of follow-up visits and antibiotics fighting a resistant infection.

Various options are available to promote healing, decrease swelling and inflammation, prevent infection and provide pain relief all in the form of simple topical medications ranging from lotions, creams, and ointments to sprays, mucosal bandages, and irrigations. These medications are easy to apply and topical anesthetics can make application a painless experience.

Proper wound care is especially important for patients with vascular disease and diabetes who may already have trouble healing, due to decreased blood circulation. We are able to formulate specific compounds to alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life for patients suffering from painful, recurring wounds and ulcers.
